'Multiple teams' eyeing five-time All-Star this summer

Donovan Mitchell could be in the middle of this summer's trade saga. The five-time All-Star will be entering the final year of his contract next season. His unwillingness to commit his future to the Cleveland Cavaliers could force their hand.

During Wednesday's episode of ESPN's "Get Up," NBA insider Brian Windhorst confirmed that Mitchell would have a robust trade market if the Cavaliers make him available.

"The Cavs will offer him a massive contract extension, potentially the largest in the history of the organization," Windhorst said. "He has given no indication that he wants to leave, but he's also been very careful not to commit. The NBA, especially beginning with what Donovan says at the end of the season, is paying very close attention because multiple teams would love to make a huge offer to the Cavs if Donovan does not choose to extend his contract."

Cleveland will face the Boston Celtics on Wednesday. The Cavs trail their Eastern Conference semifinal series 3-1. Mitchell will be absent from that game due to a calf strain. If the Cavaliers lose, Mitchell could potentially have played his last game for the Ohio-based franchise.

If the Cavaliers choose to trade Mitchell, they will undoubtedly be looking to receive a significant return via trade. A package of young talent and draft picks would be the baseline.

Yet, if the front office wishes to continue building toward contention, they may seek a ready-made star in return. A lot would hinge on how the front office views the roster regarding whether they're capable of being a future contender.

Mitchell's future is far from certain, so the Cavaliers will struggle to plan for next season. They must figure out whether he'll remain with the franchise or move on. Those conversations have to take place soon so both parties can begin prepping for what comes next.
